On March 7th, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. – Richmond Metropolitan Area Chapter hosted a fireside chat on Black maternal health, “Birthing Resilience: Amplifying African-American Women’s Maternal Health,” as a part of the chapter’s ongoing advocacy efforts around health. Set on the campus of VCU at the Alumni House, the evening included key remarks from policy expert and former Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Shawtera Hardy, as well as an expert panel discussion including Dr. Nicole Rankins (OB-GYN), Kenda Sutton-EL (Founder and Executive Director of Birth in Color), and Candice Parkins (MSN, WHNP-BC). Event speakers shed light on the unique challenges faced by Black women in maternal health, provided valuable insights and resources for advocacy and education, and discussed actionable solutions to address disparities at both the community and policy levels. Attendees included chapter representatives, members of the general public, and the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Assistant Secretary Lizbeth Casco White.
